Could E-Cigarettes Replace Tobacco?

According to Wells Fargo Securities consumer research division, it could happen.

Bonnie Herzog, the Director of Beverage, Tobacco and Consumer Research for Wells Fargo, stated that it’s possible that electronic cigarette consumption could overthrow tobacco cigarettes within a 10 year timeframe. This is due to a general trend towards healthier and more alternative living – it seems everyone’s trying to live organic and reduce their carbon footprint, doesn’t it? It’s this relatively recent trend of healthier lifestyles that could finally be the solution that makes tobacco smoking a thing of the past.

“While difficult to predict, we think it is possible that consumption of e-cigarettes could outpace traditional cigarettes over the next decade, especially given the rapid pace of innovation and consumers’ demand for reduced harm products,” Herzog said.

Herzog goes on to compare the trend between e-cigarettes vs. tobacco in the smoking market to energy drinks vs. soda in the beverage market. Not in terms of health benefits, mind you – many energy drinks (sadly) have just as much sugar as any other tasty beverage – but the rise of popularity and shift in market share is what’s comparable. Electronic cigarettes are where energy drinks were 5-6 years ago, gaining quickly in popularity and just beginning to get widespread recognition. I’ve always thought that e-cigarettes would one day make tobacco smoking a thing of the past as the technology becomes more advanced and the benefits can no longer be ignored. And I should know; they don’t call me the ECig Professor for nothin’!

Of course there’s no way to say for sure when, or even if, this will happen, but for the sake of global health it’s a pretty exciting thought. Now if only they’d come out with an e-cheeseburger…
